Walking Holidays – Character Farm Cottages Langton Herring Weymouth

Weymouth is an absolute haven for anyone looking for a walking holiday in Dorset. We had the immense pleasure of staying at Character Farm Cottages Langton Herring, just outside of Weymouth, which was off-the-beaten-track enough to enjoy a truly rural retreat but only 15 minutes or so drive to all of the main sightseeing attractions and walking routes.

What makes Langton Herring such a perfect place to stay is that it’s only a short walk down to the South West Coast Path / Dorset Coast Path, where you can enjoy the Jurrassic Coast at it’s best, and without too much effort you can head inland for some wonderful countryside hill walking, where the 360 degree views were absolutely stunning. In fact, as I am writing this article at 3 Lower Farm I can see right across the hills to Hardys Monument on Blackdown, some 7 miles away!

Character Farm Cottages comprises of 3 Lower Farm self catering holiday cottage, Chelsea self catering cottage, Chestnut self catering holiday cottage, The Swallows self catering holiday cottage, The Sycamores self catering holiday cottage and The Willows and Brambles country cottages.

We stayed at 3 Lower Farm, a spacious 2 bedroom stone cottage that has retained all of it’s original features with a wonderfully cosy inglenook fireplace, old wooden beams and a large family size kitchen with everything you need taken care of. Our stay included the night of the October storm and I didn’t actually hear a thing all night, in fact I enjoyed a peaceful nights sleep each and every night.

During our stay at Character Farm Cottages Langton Herring we had a look around all of the other cottages that are well spaced apart in different areas of the village. The Chelsea self catering cottage is in the quiet hamlet of Rodden, about half-way between Abbotsbury and Weymouth, and sleeps up to 8 people. The Chelsea has a very well kept garden in the lush green fields of the farm and is traditionally furnished with a homely lounge and cosy log fire.

The Chestnut self catering holiday cottage is more luxurious and won a prestigious Enjoy England Gold Award, which offers a guarantee of quality. The Chestnut is an old stone barn that has been converted to a very high standard with a cosy wood-burner set into a stone fireplace, sleeps up to 9 people and with a M2 Disabled Rating it is suitable for wheelchair users, and accessible for all.

The Swallows self catering holiday cottage is a Dorset cottage full of character which is situated close to the coastal path offering breathtaking views of Chesil Beach and sleeps up to 4 people with the Sycamores Cottage close by with it’s exposed beams and an open log fire, sleeping up to 5 people. The Willows and Brambles country cottages are the smallest and cosiest cottages suitable for single travellers, couples or pairs and both have open log fires, Both have been given Gold award by English Tourist Board and are situated right on the doorstep of a myriad of great walks. All of these cottages are close to where you can meet the calves and watch the cows being milked to enjoy a true farm experience.

We had a great time at 3 Lower Farm and the whole family had time to do their own thing but still have time for each other. There were shopping trips for the girls to Poole and Dorchester, family walks at Abbotsbury, I got out for a couple of really good long walks, Tedi and I had a couple of local adventures to the Fleet Lagoon Nature Reserve (he loved having the cows, cats, dog and feeding the horse his breakfast right on his doorstep!) and family trips to the local attractions.
