Walks And Walking – Sandgate Circular Walk in Kent

This is a short 2.5 mile circular walk in Sandgate, a small seaside village just outside of Folkestone on the Kent coast. The walk starts at the car park at Castle Road which is set just off Sandgate High Street by Sandgate Castle.

From the car park walk up to Sandgate High Street and turn right to walk along the pavement and up the hill.

As you walk up the hill you pass Spade House on your right hand side, which is where H.G Wells lived during his 12 year stay in Sandgate in 1898.

Just after Spade House on the left hand side is a footpath. Take this footpath and then go through the first gate which leads in to Enbrook Park, the Head Office for insurance and travel company Saga.

Keep to the right of this path for a short while until you see an archway that leads up in to the park woodland on your right hand side.

Keep following this path all the way to the end where it eventually zig zags downhill at the back of the car park.

Turn right along the path at the bottom and then turn left at the kissing gate on a track that leads down to Enbrook Road.

Walk left, cross over the road and turn right up Chichester Road.

After a few metres turn left up the narrow footpath that leads on to Bybrook Way.

Cross over the Military Road to the footpath opposite and then turn right and follow the signs to the Martello Towers at Shorncliffe Camp.

At the mid-point from Martello Tower No. 6 to Martello Tower No. 7 is Nick’s View, a bench with a lovely view over Sandgate to the sea, including Sandgate Castle which was built in 1539.

Continue along the escarpment path to Martello Tower No 7, with Shorncliffe Camp MOD land on the right hand side and the intermittent views of the sea on your left.

As you make your way through the Wild Garlic the paths then go in a myriad of directions but if you keep ahead but to the left for as long as you can you will end up at Brewers Hill, a pathway that leads straight down to Sandgate Esplanade.

From here you simply turn left and walk back to the car park through Sandgate village or along the sea wall.

This walk takes about an hour and is exactly 2.5 miles long.
