Walks And Walking – Appledore Walk in Devon

Walks And WalkingAppledore Walk in Devon.

This is a 7 mile circular walk from Appeldore to Westward Ho! in Devon.

After the demanding walks in Hartland and Morwenstow my third and final walk during our holiday to Devon was much more relaxed but just as interesting.

From The Quay in Appledore I walked up Bude Street, turning left on to Odun Road and then right up Richmond Road which then turns in to Churchill Way, eventually turning right down North Street.

I continued down North Street passing the church on my left hand side in to Tower Street and then Lakenham Hill where I followed the road all the way down to Atlantic Way turning right down Beach road and then left along Golf Links Road.

As I walked passed Bideford, Littleham and Westward Ho! Cricket Club the South West Coast Path was just ahead. I walked right at the sea wall and followed the coastline all the way back to Appledore.

I walked behind the cricket club following the sign posts for the South West Coast Path where I joined Pebbleridge Road, which is more like a coastal lane, in to the North Burrows Country Park where wild ponies and plenty of sheep were grazing all the way up to Sandymere Car Park.

There is the option to walk on the beach or the pebble ridge but I stuck to the road. With Sandymere lake on my left hand side I continued to follow the coast path around a building and the edge of the Royal North Devon golf club.

I walked all the way up to the peninsula to admire the convergence of the Rivers Taw and Torridge where I then continued my walk around the coastline to the car park and small road walking left to follow the coastal path at the next sign post.

At low tide you can walk across the beach but there are clear sign posts to follow if the tide is in that both lead to the lifeboat station.

I then walked all the way along Irsha Street through Appledore car park and back on to The Quay where I celebrated the end of my walk with an ice cream.
