HF Holidays 11 Mile Linear Hard Walk to Dunkery Beacon

HF Holidays 11 Mile Linear Hard Walk to Dunkery Beacon

This was our fifth and final walk during our week at Holnicote House with HF Holidays.

It was an 11 mile linear hard walk from our drop off point at Wheddon Cross up to Dunkery Beacon at the summit of Dunkery Hill and then back down all the way to Holnicote House.

Our HF Holidays walk leader today was Stuart and after a quick outline of our walk we set off from the car park to walk left down the lane to our first footpath signpost to Dunkery through dense woodlands.

Once in the woodlands we followed the Tom’s Path signposts using the permitted footpath to Dunkery via Drapers Way.

We continued to follow this track to the next signpost for Dunkery Gate.

The track then opened up to beautiful views across Exmoor National Park where we followed the next bridleway signpost to Dunkery Beacon.

We then crossed a stream to arrive at a small car park where we then followed the public bridleway signpost to Exford and followed The National Trust Dunkery signpost track across moorland.

The mist was so low and it was drizzling with rain so all we could really see was green and purple.

We continued our walk along the main track where we then walked right to find Dunkery Beacon straight ahead of us.

After a good length stop off for lunch we were off again in to the mist.

We continued our walk circling round to the left track which took us right along a lane. It was here that Stuart spotted some red deer. Initially just one from a mile or so away but then more started to stand up and eventually there was a group of 20 or 30 that moved up to the top of the hill they were resting in.

After a short time we then entered more dense woodlands to gently zig zag down the path to a bridge over the stream.

We stopped here for a well deserved rest before taking on the last section of the walk back to Holnicote House.

At Horner we followed the signpost to Holnicote walking right by the gate in to the Holnicote Estate.
