HF Holidays Larpool Hall – Roseberry Topping Walk

HF Holidays Larpool Hall – Roseberry Topping Walk

This HF Holidays guided walk in the North York Moors National Park starts in Newton Under Roseberry and finishes in Pinchinthorpe, covering a total distance of 4 miles with a total ascent of 700 feet.

The coach picked us up promptly from Larpool Hall at 9.30am for a 40 minute drive from Whitby to Middlesbrough.

Our walk leader talked us through the walking route, and we set off from the car park to a lane heading straight for Roseberry Topping.

It was a misty start to the day but fortunately, by the time we got there it had cleared so managed some quite lovely views.

We continued our walk up the lane into the North York Moors where Roseberry Topping looked almost volcanic in the mist.

We then entered The National Trust area of Roseberry Topping and headed up into the woodlands for a gentle climb up to the top.

Here we headed up the grassy slope to the Shooting Box, a building to the right of Roseberry Topping that was built for the local gentry and used as a romantic spot for picnics or for shooting.

If you don’t fancy the short scramble up there you can walk up and around the slope.

We then continued our walk across the slopes to join the track to take us up to the top of the Topping.

Rather than take the direct path we walked around the back of Roseberry Topping and then slowly zig zagged up to the top.

We stopped for a break to enjoy the views of the Cleveland Hills and take the customary photographs by the trig point.

We then continued our walk heading steeply down Roseberry Topping and into Roseberry Common and woodland.

The rest of the walk was very easy and flat so we were able to enjoy chatting and letting the children run in front of us.

We stopped for lunch in the woodland and then walked the final mile to the visitor centre at Pinchinthorpe, a small hamlet near to Guisborough in Redcar and Cleveland.

The children then played in the extensive playground before we exited the centre to cross the road and board our coach back to Whitby.

It was the perfect walk to end our short break walking holiday with HF, and marked our 20th mile of walks over three days.
